I’ve Tried Thousands of Beers. This Cheap West Coast IPA Is the Perfect Warm Weather Sipper

As the temperatures warm up for spring, it’s time to put away the dark beers and reach for this delicious IPA. If you didn’t realize it already, we are firmly entrenched in a brewing boom in the U.S. At last count, there are almost 10,000 breweries, craft or otherwise. There were only about 1,500 in 1999. That’s an awful lot of beer to choose from. This is true even if you stick to only one style in particular—especially if it’s the classic west coast IPA.

The first west coast IPA is believed to have been created by beer pioneer Fritz Maytag when he introduced the Anchor Liberty Ale in 1975. The style is well-known for its mix of citrus, pine, and sometimes aggressively bitter hop finish and the use of cascade, centennial, citra, simcoe, and a handful of other popular hops. In my almost twenty years of writing about alcohol, I’ve had my fair share of award-winning, balanced, and memorable west coast IPAs. I’ve also had quite a few uncomfortably bitter IPAs. And while I can appreciate the highly-rated craft IPAs coming out of San Diego and beyond, I can also give props to the original west coast IPAs that I started drinking in college and continue to enjoy to this day. Especially Lagunitas IPA. Tony Magee, founder of Lagunitas Brewing Company, began brewing beer in 1993. Magee launched Lagunitas IPA in 1995 as an answer to the popular California pale ales like Sierra Nevada. The sublimely balanced IPA is brewed with English crystal, caramel, and Munich malts. It gets its hop presence from the liberal use of cascade, centennial, chinook, and simcoe hops. The result is a great IPA for beginners and experienced drinkers alike. It all starts with a nose of orchard fruits, orange peels, ripe grapes, and floral, piney hops. The palate is centered on lemon peels, honeydew melons, caramel malts, dank pine, and a hoppy, bitter, resinous finish that leaves you craving more. It’s refreshing and balanced, the kind of beer you want to crack open on a hot day after mowing the lawn or while playing bocce, ladder ball, croquet, or any other yard game. Lagunitas IPA has such a big footprint that you can find it at any beer retailer from Petaluma, CA—where Lagunitas is located—to Palm Beach, FL. This is a classic grocery store IPA that’s always there waiting for you no matter where you live. I can almost guarantee if you stroll into your local gas station mini mart or grocery store, you’ll find this beer in the cooler.

Did I mention that a six-pack of Lagunitas IPA is only $10 to $12? It couldn’t be more affordable. I’m not here to tell you not to try your local craft brewery’s newest, trendy dry-hopped west Coast IPA—I’m all about supporting local craft breweries. But you shouldn’t sleep on one of the original go-tos either. Sure, it’s been on the market since Billy Madison was in theaters, but Lagunitas IPA is the type of beer that never goes out of style.

**토니 마기(Tony Magee)**가 1993년 설립한 **라구니타스 브루잉 컴퍼니(Lagunitas Brewing Company)**는 1995년 라구니타스 IPA를 출시했다. 당시 캘리포니아 페일 에일(예: 시에라 네바다)을 대체할 만한 맥주로 개발한 것이다. 이 IPA는 잉글리시 크리스털 맥아, 카라멜 맥아, 뮌헨 맥아를 사용해 부드러운 몰트 바디를 만든다. 홉은 캐스케이드, 센테니얼, 치눅(Chinook), 심코를 아낌없이 사용하여 균형 잡힌 맛을 완성했다.

그 결과, IPA 초보자든 경험이 많은 애호가든 누구나 즐길 수 있는 훌륭한 맥주가 탄생했다. 향에서는 과수원 과일, 오렌지 껍질, 잘 익은 포도, 꽃향과 솔향이 느껴진다. 맛은 레몬 껍질, 허니듀 멜론, 카라멜 맥아, 진한 솔향이 조화를 이루며, 피니시는 홉의 씁쓸한 레진 느낌이 남아 계속 마시고 싶어진다. 상쾌하고 균형 잡힌 맛 덕분에 더운 날 잔디를 깎은 후 또는 보치, 사다리 던지기, 크로케 같은 야외 게임을 할 때 마시기 좋다.

라구니타스 IPA는 유통망이 워낙 커서, 캘리포니아 **페탈루마(Petaluma)**에서 플로리다 **팜비치(Palm Beach)**까지 어디서든 구할 수 있다. 편의점, 주류 매장, 심지어 가스 스테이션에서도 쉽게 찾을 수 있는 ‘클래식한’ IPA다.

여기에 가격도 합리적이다. 6팩이 10~12달러에 불과하다. 나는 지역 크래프트 브루어리가 새롭게 출시하는 드라이 호핑 웨스트 코스트 IPA를 시도하지 말라는 게 아니다. 나도 지역 브루어리를 응원하는 걸 좋아한다. 하지만 웨스트 코스트 IPA의 원조 중 하나인 라구니타스 IPA를 잊어서는 안 된다.

빌리 매디슨(Billy Madison) 영화가 극장에서 상영되던 시절부터 출시된 맥주지만, 라구니타스 IPA는 절대 유행이 지나지 않는 맥주다.
