Despite the first barley based beer being brewed 5400 years ago, filtration is a relatively new technique in the art and science of brewing. The first industrial beer filter was introduced in 1878 by German developer Lorenze Adelbert Enzinger. This Bavarian man designed a device that consisted of multiple iron plates that used paper sheets as a filter medium. These sheets had to be replaced after each filtration. Shortly after the patent of this filter, Enzinger formed a company to produce and sell his design, and was able to sell 1000 filters within a span of 8 years. The first filter capable of sterile filtration was developed in 1913 by the German chemist Friedrich Schmitthenner while working for Seitz works. In 1982 Enzinger merged with Seitz to form what is now KHS, an international manufacturer of filling and packaging equipment. (Dornbusch, 2011) Today filtration is common practice in many breweries, and is used to remove solids, increase shelf life, and improve stability of beer. If beer filtration is performed incorrectly it can negatively impact a beers flavor and stability.
